Search Engine Optimisation Overview

Internet users find web sites primarily by using search engines. That is they search for a product or service using a search engine rather than by typing in a web address (or URL) directly. Search Engine optimisation is the equivalent of your real world marketing activities...getting your business, product or service in front of people who want to buy what you have to sell.

You must understand what keywords people use to search for your product(s) or services(s) and undertake the effort to have your site rank highly (on the first page of results) for these keyword(s).

What keywords are people using to search for your product/service?

Most Internet users only focus on the first page of Search Engine results and if they cannot find a suitable site, they search again. In less than 3% of cases will users "page forward" through the second and subsequent results pages.

Your web site must appear on the first page of Search Engine results

Today, three Search Engines represent the vast majority of Internet Searches. They are Google, Yahoo and MSN (NineMSN in Australia). Each Search engine uses different rules to "rank" web sites. Interestingly, whilst Google according to most surveys represents that largest volume of searches on the Internet, other surveys suggest that users of Yahoo & NineMSN are most likely to purchase products or services via the Internet.

You must undertake search engine optimisation for the 3 major Search Engines

Search Engine Optimisation...

...means creating pages which are optimised according to the rules of the different search engines for the keyword phrases which relate to your product or service. These pages then need to be submitted to the Search Engines (eg. Google, Yahoo and NineMSN).

Most web sites do not achieve this objective naturally. Web sites are usually created with Corporate Objectives in mind, sometimes with Customer Objectives also, but rarely with Search Engine Optimisation as a focus. As a result, most web sites do not appear anywhere near the front of results listings on Search Engines.

Search Engine Optimisation Example

1. Enviromower sells a cordless lawn mower which site ranks in the No. 1 &. No. 2 position on NineMSN for cordless lawn mower at this time (Click here to see the results of this search engine optimisation).

Achieving this search engine optimization result increased web site traffic by over 2,000% and sales by over 300%.

Is Search Engine Optimisation the Silver Bullet?

In a word, no. Search Engine Optimisation must be undertaken as part of an overall Web Site Promotion Strategy. Your results from Search Engine Optimisation are dependant upon a number of factors outside your (and our) control. Your competitors may also want to rank highly for your selected keywords. Search Engines change their ranking rules and sites that did rank on the first page may drop in ranking significantly as a result. Google also uses "page rank" (how many other relevant web sites link back to your site) as a means to rank a web site, so listing with vertical and horizontal portals and link exchanges are important to rank highly with Google.

Search Engine Optimisation should be one part of an overall Web Site Promotion Strategy.

There are around 30 different web site promotion tactics we employ to promote a site, depending upon the product or service in question. The key however, is to manage, on an ongoing basis, the web site promotion activities undertaken and continually refine them so as to:

  1. Increase the number of unique visitors
  2. Increase the conversion rate
  3. Increase the value of average sales
